Alumni Concert and Other Items
September 12th, 2007 | by Bill Snodgrass |JO exes,
- Thanks to Tim Ishii and Dan Cavanagh, we’ve just added another 40 names to the JO exes memebership.
- The third annual Jazz Alumni scholarship concert to be held on Oct. 28, 2007.
- The UTAJO will be performing at TMEA this year. more details later
- Tim, Dan and I would like to organize a get-together for UTAJAZZ EX educators at TMEA this year. We were thinking we might meet at the bar in the Hilton an hour before the college receptions on Friday night. Add your comments to this post if you’re up for that.
- There has been a suggestion that we honor a past alum at each future jazz alumni scholarship concert. Any ideas on criteria, etc. is appreciated. Again, post your thoughts below.

I’m down with the hang in SA.
As for past alums, we should honor those that have had to put up with the most abuse and sheer terror at the hand of our director. I think having to play the head to Donna Lee by oneself as an 18-year-old bass trombonist certainly qualifies. But alas, I’m nowhere near qualified enough to receive accolades with the likes of Tony Valdez, Irwin Aaronsky, Ken Edwards and Paul Compton having been in the band.
We may be a little school, but we’ve had some great players over the years. It’s tough to single out just one a year, but that gives us an excuse to keep getting together every fall.

TMEA EXES HANG. On Friday night at TMEA before the college receptions, myself, Tim and Dan sort of hosted a pre-reception hang of the UTA JAZZ exes at th Marriott Riverwalk bar. We were pleased to see that 30+exes and their spouses showed up along with about the same number of current players from the JO. A good time was had by all. However, I must admit that I was appalled at some of the stories, more like complete fabrications, that some of the old exes told about me as the new guys overheard. I’ve never heard such a bunch of longwinded, total lies, outright malicious and well, there’s no other way to describe it, horriibly exaggerated tales about me coming from the very students I had bent over backwards to be so kind to when they were in school. I guess Tim and Dan knew this was coming because they had already braced me with two or three
glasses of forgiveness from the heather in Scotland. I’m telling you right now, I was shocked to hear such revisionist history from these guys. And what made matters worse, they all seemed delighted in their telling of these stories. I’ve sat by the phone everyday since then just sure that they would call and apologize,,,,so far nada, not a word from those little sissies who actually abused me back,,, i mean, abused me so badly while I was sitting there nearly incapacitated. Next year, things are going to be DIFFERENT! Seriously, it was wonderful seeing and talking with so many of the exes. Indeed, it was a little slice of Heaven, a little piece of Paradise, another fun memory to add to lots of fun memories.

Bill,
You probably don’t remember me, but i’m glad you’re still kicking. I was in the Dallas area for awhile, and I ‘m sorry I never dropped by.
Good luck to all you guys!
